Targeted Support - Frequently Asked Questions about Training
Training
Will all the staff still need to have a medication test?
- Yes, in the draft job descriptions both support co-ordinators and support workers are required to administer medication.
Will Support Workers need more training to work with all the service users e.g. MOA, Manual Handling?
- There will be a skills audit and an induction planned around service users needs throughout the pilot.
What about the review of physical intervention / skills audit
- This will be undertaken at the time of review.
Will Support Workers loose some skills during the piloting e.g. giving medication?
- We will need to keep this under review. It is envisaged that Support Workers will need to have more skills as they will be working with a wider range of service users. This will be taken into consideration during induction.
General Comments/Observations/Suggestions for Training
- The suggestion of only Support Co’s giving the medication is good, but only if there is always a support co on shift.
- Concern about only Service Co’s giving medication due to possible problems covering absence of support co.
- Suggestion that if all the current staff are med tested in their current service before the pilot starts, they could provide emergency back up during the pilot if needed.
- Suggestion of adapted med test for Support Workers, included during the induction, which does not involve knowledge of all the side effects etc.
- Agreement will be needed as to how much information Support Workers will need to have about service users.
